Modest dressing in a South African summer

Summer here is not gentle. The instinct is to wear less, but the smarter move is to wear differently: looser cuts, lighter weaves and colours that reflect rather than absorb.

Fabric first. Cotton poplin, linen blends and viscose move air. Anything with a heavy synthetic content will trap heat no matter how loose the cut, so check the label before the price tag.

Cut second. A wide, straight silhouette that skims the body lets air circulate. Gathered waists and A-line skirts do more for comfort than any amount of shortening would.

Colour third. Sand, bone, sage and soft clay stay cool in direct sun and photograph beautifully against our light. Save the deep tones for evenings and cooler months.

The trend we are watching most closely this season is the long shirt dress worn open over matching trousers. It is one purchase, two outfits, and it suits almost every body.
